Coffee is so influential in Turkish culture that the Turkish word for “breakfast” literally translates to “before coffee” and the word for “brown” translates to “the color of coffee”. Turkish coffee is a method of preparation, where beans are roasted and then finely ground, boiled in a pot (cezve), and served in a small cup where the grounds are allowed to settle. After drinking Turkish coffee, the cup is commonly turned over into the saucer to cool, and then the patterns of the coffee grounds can be used for a method of fortune telling known as tasseography.
